Tuesday Trivia: 100 years ago on September 16th, a man named Durant incorporated something significant in America. What was it, and what was his full name (middle name can at times be indicative of American engineering in this industry!)?
Tuesday Help Tip: Hate that foggy film on the inside of your windshield? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows look filmy, rub with the eraser. Works better than a cloth.
Tuesday Fun Stuff: Sports Illustrated has a great section of their website that allows you to leaf through and zoom in on every page of selected back issues. The stories are great.
Ironically, I was reading a 1962 story on the advent of fiberglass poles in pole vaulting, where they touted the new MEN’S world record of 16’ 1.25”, at the very moment I was watching Russia’s Elina Isinbaeva break the WOMEN’S Pole Vault World Record in Beijing with 16’5.5”. We’ve come a long way, baby.
The ads are hysterical. For a delightful few minutes, step back into time…. Click on this link, and browse the best of yesteryear:
Tuesday Health Tip: Don’t get to the boiling point… British researchers tested various vegetable cooking methods for their effects on cancer fighting glucosinolates. Steaming, stir-frying and microwaving all left the good guys in tact… only boiling wiped them out, reducing the cancer fighters by 90%.
Tuesday Blog Review:
OK… Healthy and well-rated sunblocks I’ve tried… and one I hate (Cosmetics Databse’s rating in parentheses… lower is better):
For Body:
Don’t Bother: Burt’s Bees Chemical Free Sunblock SPF 30 (3)… terrible consistency… maybe they did a joint venture with Benjamin Moore Paint?
OK: Jason Family Sunblock SPF36 (3) … a bit too white for me, but not terrible
Pretty Good and Cheap: Badger SPF30 (0!!) a slight white cast, but cheap and REALLY innocuous on the system.
Best: Ti-Silc Untinted SPF 45 (2) … good consistency, high SPF, acceptable level of white cast.
For Face:
Good: Z-Silc Plus SPF30 (1) Not too bad, a bit of white cast that needs to dealt with.
Better: Vanicream SPF35 (1)… it is pretty shiny… good moisture, though!
Best: DDF Organic Sun Block (2)…. this one is really great… a perfect balance of moisture and coverage, with hardly a hint of white cast.
Healthy Sunblock Maven and Tuesday Tips reader Melody P. also recommends sunblock by Marie Veronique.

Last Tuesday’s Trivia answers are… Part A, which my sis Shelley correctly answered, is Q is the only letter that does not appear in any U.S. state name. Part B, which no one answered, is that Maine is the only single-syllable state name.
